Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is defined by the American Gastrointestinal Association as “an autoimmune disorder that causes your immune system to interfere with the proper function of the small intestine.” Celiac Disease occurs when you cannot tolerate the ingestion of the protein gluten in the digestive system.

Gluten is primarily found in foods that contain wheat, barley or rye. When gluten is ingested, an immune reaction causing damage to the inner surface of the small intestine occurs. This damage impairs the ability of the small intestine to absorb many nutrients. For this reason an individual can become malnourished, no matter how much food is ingested.

What are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

  • Abdominal bloating/gas
  • Behavioral changes
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Dental defects
  • Fatigue
  • Hair Loss
  • Infertility
  • Itchy skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis)
  • Low iron levels
  • Muscle cramps
  • Seizures
  • Skin rashes/blistering
  • Weight loss/weight gain

Treatment for Celiac in Dallas TX

Dr. James Hakert recommends a strict gluten-free diet for those Dallas, TX area patients diagnosed with celiac disease. Unfortunately, this is a lifetime recommendation, but following the diet will help to protect your small intestine. While results vary among patients, the good news is that a gluten-free diet will improve your symptoms. Over time, your small intestine will begin absorbing nutrients again normally. However, you will still need to maintain the gluten-free diet or risk the reoccurrence of celiac disease symptoms.
