Hemorrhoids

A hemorrhoid results when the veins in and around the rectum and anus become swollen. These veins become enlarged when there is increased pressure in the lower rectum. Some of the most common causes of hemorrhoids are age, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, overuse of laxatives, pregnancy, straining during bowel movements and heavy weight lifting.

There are two forms of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids are clumps of tissue within the anal canal that contain blood vessels, muscle, and elastic fibers. External hemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessels surrounding the exterior of the anus. It’s important to note that internal hemorrhoids cause painless bleeding and external hemorrhoids can be quite painful.

What Treatments are available for Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are treated with a variety of measures including over-the-counter medicine (creams, lotions, gels, pads, wipes, etc.), procedures (sclerotherapy, rubber band ligation, etc.), and surgery. For internal hemorrhoid treatment, Dr. James Hakert prefers to use the non-surgical CRH O'Regan Hemorrhoid Removal System procedure in most cases due to its high success rate and is relatively painless. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, you are encouraged to see a gastroenterologist and start treatment that can alleviate the pain with little recovery time.
